Brazil 2026 elections: Official campaign period begins FAST-MOVING
The 2026 electoral campaign in Brazil officially commenced on Sunday, August 16. Candidates are now permitted to request votes and engage in various public activities, including parades, carreatas, and the distribution of campaign materials. According to regulations from the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE), street activities are allowed between 8:00 and 22:00, while political rallies can take place until midnight until October 1. Campaigning must maintain a minimum distance of 200 meters from sensitive locations such as hospitals, schools, military barracks, and government buildings.
Digital campaigning and paid internet advertising are also permitted. However, specific rules apply to live broadcasts; they are considered public campaign acts even without explicit vote requests. Furthermore, electoral lives cannot be retransmitted on channels owned by legal entities, though political party channels are exempt. Free electoral advertising on radio and television is scheduled to run from August 28 to October 1.
Economically, the 2026 electoral advertising period is projected to cost approximately R$ 996 million in tax waivers for the government, a nearly 35% nominal increase compared to the R$ 740 million in tax compensation provided during the 2022 elections. The first round of voting is set for October 4, with a potential second round on October 25.
