Brazil 2026 elections see highest first-round abstention since 1998

Brazil's 2026 general elections saw a significant 21.08% abstention rate in the first round, the highest for a presidential first round since 1998. Approximately 33 million voters failed to cast ballots, a trend attributed by political scientists to high polarization and voter disillusionment.

Despite the high abstention, the second round is scheduled for October 25. The Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) clarified that voters who missed the first round can still participate in the second round, provided their electoral status is regular. Those who did not justify their absence in the first round must do so by December 3 to avoid fines and potential restrictions on official documents and public services.

To facilitate participation, the TRE-SP program 'Seu Voto Importa' allows voters with disabilities or reduced mobility in São Paulo to request free transportation until October 16. Additionally, the INSS has implemented a mechanism where voting records serve as automatic proof of life for beneficiaries, simplifying administrative requirements for retirees and pensioners.
