Free electoral advertising on radio and television for the 2026 Brazilian elections has commenced. The broadcasts run through October 1 for the first round, with a potential resumption for a second round from October 9 to October 23.
Advertising is presented via block programming and 30 or 60-second insertions. For the first round, broadcasters reserve 70 minutes daily for insertions. While the airtime is free for candidates and parties, production costs are considered electoral expenses and must be accounted for. Broadcasters receive partial tax compensation, with taxpayers covering approximately 80% of the lost advertising revenue through tax exemptions.
Regulations set by the TSE include rules on content, artificial intelligence, and accessibility. Legal expert Gilmar Cardoso notes that supporters appearing in broadcasts are limited to 25% of the total time per piece. Specific time allocations include 5 minutes and 31 seconds for the PT and 4 minutes and 20 seconds for the PL, while the Novo and Missão parties will not receive television time due to performance clause requirements.
