Brazil 2026 elections: voting order and rules explained

For the 2026 general elections in Brazil, scheduled for October 4, voters will make six distinct choices on the electronic voting machines. The voting sequence, established by the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE), follows a specific order: Federal Deputy, State or District Deputy, two Senators, Governor, and finally President of the Republic.

Regarding candidate eligibility, voters can choose any candidate running for President regardless of their home state due to the national scope of the office. However, for positions such as Governor, Senator, and Deputies, voters must select candidates linked to their own state or federal unit. In municipal elections, voting is restricted to the specific municipality where the voter is registered.

To ensure security and accuracy, the electronic machines include a one-second pause after digits are entered, displaying a ‘Confira seu voto’ (Check your vote) message. This allows voters to verify the candidate's photo, name, and party before pressing the ‘Confirma’ button. Identification requires an official photo ID, such as a passport, driver's license, or the e-Título app.
