Brazil internet users: 45 million face data-related scams
A new study by Cetic.br reveals that approximately 45 million Brazilian internet users aged 16 or older, representing 32% of the population in this demographic, have experienced attempted scams involving their personal data. Furthermore, 20% of these users reported being actual victims of such crimes.
Scammers utilize various communication channels to target individuals. Messaging applications are the most frequent method, cited by 84% of those targeted, followed by phone calls at 79%. Other common methods include fake websites or apps (71%), SMS (71%), email (69%), and social media (67%).
The consequences of these scams extend beyond financial loss. Among victims, 48% reported having money stolen, and 43% lost access to email or social media accounts. Additionally, 58% of victims reported experiencing emotional stress and malaise. The research also noted that users who access the internet exclusively via mobile phones are more frequently targeted by fake websites and apps (80%) compared to those using a combination of mobile and computer (68%).
