Brazil: 45 million people affected by personal data fraud

A survey conducted by the Center for Regional Research on Information Society Development in Brazil reveals that 45 million people have been victims of personal data fraud. Approximately 20% of survey participants reported being victims of such scams.

Messaging applications were the most common method used for fraudulent contact, cited by 84% of participants, followed by phone calls (79%), fake websites or apps (71%), SMS (71%), email (69%), and social media (67%).

The consequences of these scams extend beyond financial loss. According to the study, 58% of victims reported psychological stress, 48% lost money, 43% lost access to email or social media accounts, and 42% faced debts or unauthorized transactions made in their name.

The research also noted concerns regarding generative AI. While 73% of Brazilians use AI for work or study, many share personal information, including emotions, health data, and photos, with these tools, increasing privacy risks. The center emphasized the need for improved user awareness, digital skills training, and stronger data protection mechanisms by businesses and government agencies.
