Brazil: 50% of single mothers have never traveled for leisure

A recent study by Nexus, released in partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, highlights significant socioeconomic disparities regarding leisure and travel among single-parent households in Brazil.

The research reveals that 50% of single mothers in Brazil have never taken a leisure trip, a notably higher percentage compared to the 37% of single fathers who reported the same. The study suggests that travel is often the first item removed from family budgets when income is limited.

Beyond financial constraints, the report identifies several structural barriers for single mothers, including a lack of support networks, the burden of domestic labor—where women spend an average of 21.3 hours per week compared to 11.7 hours for men—and the complex logistics of managing childcare, work schedules, and household responsibilities alone.
