Brazil addresses environmental racism and climate vulnerability

Discussions regarding environmental racism in Brazil highlight how income and race significantly influence vulnerability to natural disasters, such as flooding. In cities like Guarulhos and São Paulo, residents in peripheral areas face disproportionate risks due to a lack of infrastructure investment and urban planning.

To address these structural inequalities, a seminar titled ‘Environmental Racism, Unequal Production of the City and Territorial Justice’ is scheduled to take place at ENSP/Fiocruz in Rio de Janeiro. The event will bring together researchers, social movements, and public institutions, including the Public Ministry and the Public Defender's Office, to debate climate justice, territorial rights, and the development of public protection policies for vulnerable populations such as favelas, quilombolas, and indigenous peoples.
