Brazil is expanding the use of artificial‑intelligence‑based traffic cameras on highways and in urban areas. In São Paulo, the Polícia Militar Rodoviária has installed vision‑computer systems on the Rodoanel Mário Covas and the Raposo Tavares highway to detect phone use, seat‑belt violations and other infractions, forwarding images to authorities for possible fines. Similar AI equipment is being trialled on federal roads such as BR‑101 in Espírito Santo and sections of BR‑116 and BR‑324 in Bahia, and in several cities for adaptive traffic‑signal control. Experts warn the technology relies on statistical probabilities and can produce false‑positive classifications.

In Rio de Janeiro’s Laranjeiras neighborhood, dozens of motorcycles gather at night, revving engines and creating loud disturbances that residents say go unpunished. The noise, often described as “ear‑splitting,” persists despite municipal law 6.179/2017 and environmental legislation that empower the municipal guard to fine excessive sound. Complaints highlight a perceived lack of enforcement and call for stronger action against the nightly rides.
