Brazil adopts new SUS health‑promotion law and holds major municipal conference
The Health Committee of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies approved a bill that sets general guidelines for promoting health and well‑being within the Unified Health System (SUS). The legislation creates an annual National Health and Well‑Being Week to be celebrated each April and outlines priorities such as healthy eating, regular physical activity, and healthy environments in schools and workplaces. The revised text, presented by rapporteur deputy Ana Pimentel, aligns the new principles with existing Ministry of Health regulations to avoid conflicts and overreach.
In Manaus, the 10th Municipal Health Conference (Comus) convened 455 delegates from management, health workers, and SUS users to develop proposals for the city’s health plan. The event featured a keynote titled "Saúde, democracia, soberania e SUS: cuidar do povo é cuidar do Brasil" and included panels on democracy, financing, climate emergencies, and integrated care. Delegates worked in groups to draft guidelines that will be presented at the conference’s final plenary and will inform the State Health Conference.
Both initiatives aim to strengthen SUS through coordinated policy and participatory planning at the national and municipal levels.
