Brazil advances HPV research and cancer prevention legislation

Scientist Luisa Lina Villa has been awarded the Octavio Frias de Oliveira Prize in the Oncology Personality category for her decades of research into the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Her work, which includes the Ludwig-McGill cohort study, was instrumental in establishing the link between HPV and various cancers, including cervical, anal, and throat cancers.

In parallel with these scientific advancements, a new legislative proposal (Bill 969/26) in Brazil aims to modernize cancer prevention within the Unified Health System (SUS). The bill, authored by Deputy Fausto Jr., proposes making the HPV vaccine mandatory in the national immunization schedule and prioritizing more precise molecular tests over the traditional Pap smear for screening.

The proposal also seeks to expand healthcare access to rural, riverside, and indigenous communities through mobile units, specifically targeting regions with high mortality rates, such as the North region of Brazil.
