Brazil advances legislation to boost women's sport and tighten adventure sport safety

The Sports Commission of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies approved a proposal that sets guidelines to promote and strengthen women's sport in major events held in the country. The measure, presented by Deputy Nely Aquino, amends the General Sports Law to require organizers of large competitions to increase the visibility of women's events, provide appropriate facilities, develop youth categories and support women sports professionals. The bill moves to the committees on Women's Rights, Finance and Taxation, and Constitution and Citizenship, and could proceed directly to the Senate. It is positioned as part of Brazil’s preparation for hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027.

A separate bill, known as the Lei Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas (PL 3099/2026), was introduced after a 21‑year‑old died in a rope‑jumping accident in Limeira, São Paulo. Named for the victim, the proposal would impose safety rules for adventure sports such as rope jumping, bungee and rapel. It requires a qualified technical responsible, risk‑management plans, periodic equipment inspections, civil‑liability insurance, double‑verification of safety checks, INMETRO certification of gear, fire‑department approvals, pre‑activity risk information for participants, and mandatory reporting of serious incidents within 24 hours.
