Brazil advances regulation for audio description profession
The Education and Culture Commission in Brazil has approved a bill to regulate the profession of audio descriptors. These professionals are responsible for translating visual images into words to assist people with visual impairments.
The proposed legislation, PL 2.273/2025, establishes professional functions, script planning requirements, and quality standards for audio description teams. The goal is to expand access to information, culture, education, health, and social participation for people with visual disabilities, as well as elderly individuals and neurodivergent people.
Senator Flávio Arns, who reported on the matter, noted that the regulation extends beyond cinema and television, playing a vital role in inclusive education by making maps, graphs, and school curricula accessible. The project now moves to the Social Affairs Commission for further analysis.
