Brazil agricultural forum addresses wild boar impacts on crops

Agricultural stakeholders in Brazil recently convened the “Javali Forum” to address the growing impact of wild boars on rural production and sanitary security. The event included representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), Embrapa, and the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA).

A survey conducted by the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of São Paulo (Faesp) involving 76 rural unions revealed that 85.5% of the represented regions report the presence of wild boars in crops. The species causes direct damage to soil and plants, particularly in major agricultural hubs like Mato Grosso, specifically in cities such as Lucas do Rio Verde and Sorriso.

Proposed management strategies include simplifying regulations, improving traceability, and utilizing new technologies for monitoring and capture. Experts emphasized that management must be tailored to local density: prevention in areas without the species, eradication in low-density areas, and containment in high-concentration zones to strengthen national biosafety.
