Brazil allocates funds for agroecology projects in Paraná and Rio Doce regions
Significant investments are being directed toward agroecology and community development in Brazil. In Paraná, the Water and Land Institute (IAT) is investing approximately R$ 39.1 million into 13 agroecology projects. These initiatives will be implemented across agrarian reform settlements in 21 municipalities, benefiting indigenous communities, artisanal fishers, and recyclers. The projects focus on protecting water sources, restoring permanent preservation areas, combating erosion, and installing rainwater harvesting systems. The funding stems from legal indemnities paid by Petrobras following a 2000 oil spill in Araucária.
In the Rio Doce region, the Rio Doce Participatory and Community Notice has selected 1,464 community projects, including 20 proposals from MST-linked agrarian reform areas in Minas Gerais. This initiative aims to provide autonomy, income, and food security to territories impacted by the Fundão dam collapse. The broader program involves the allocation of R$ 433.8 million across 49 municipalities in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, potentially benefiting over 1.3 million people through family farming and agroecological practices.
