Brazil's FGTS to distribute R$13 billion profit to 138 million workers
The Council Curator of Brazil's Fundo de Garantia do Tempo de Serviço (FGTS) is set to vote on July 28 on a proposal to allocate roughly R$13.0‑13.2 billion – about 89‑90% of the fund’s 2025 profit of R$14.6‑14.7 billion – to its members. Approximately 138.2 million workers who held either active or inactive FGTS accounts as of 31 December 2025 will receive the credit automatically, with deposits to be made by Caixa Econômica Federal no later than 31 August 2026.
The payout will be calculated by multiplying each account’s balance on the reference date by the factor 0.01868341, meaning a worker with R$1 000 in the fund would receive about R$18.68. The distribution raises the total account return to around 6.90% for 2025, outpacing the official inflation rate (IPCA) of 4.26%. The credit is added to the FGTS balance and can only be withdrawn under the law’s permitted circumstances, such as dismissal without cause, home purchase, retirement or serious illness. The measure follows a Supreme Court ruling that FGTS remuneration must at least match inflation.
