Brazil and Argentina face ongoing diplomatic crisis

Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Argentina remain strained with no immediate timeline for normalization, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The crisis follows a series of personal insults directed at President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by Argentine President Javier Milei, who has publicly referred to the Brazilian leader as “corrupt,” “thief,” and “convict.”

As a result of these tensions, Brazil has downgraded its diplomatic relations, a move described by Brazilian officials as unprecedented. The Argentine Ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Raimondi, has departed Brasília for Buenos Aires, leaving the diplomatic mission under the leadership of chargé d'affaires María Cortés. Additionally, the Brazilian Ambassador to Argentina, Júlio Bitelli, remains in Brazil for consultations, with no scheduled date for his return to Buenos Aires.

Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno initially suggested that the friction between the two presidents would not affect institutional ties, but later remarked that the region is undergoing an “ideological transformation.” The Argentine Foreign Ministry issued a note expressing regret over Brazil’s decision to downgrade relations, arguing that bilateral ties should serve the interests of the people rather than the political or personal needs of current presidents.
