Brazil and Argentina roll out Nirsevimab to protect premature infants from RSV
The municipal health authority in Várzea Grande, Brazil, has begun administering the monoclonal antibody Nirsevimab through the public health system to pre‑term infants and children with specific comorbidities. The single‑dose treatment is offered at the city maternity hospital and local health units, following national protocols that target newborns at greatest risk of severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease.
In Córdoba, Argentina, the municipal health department has added Nirsevimab to its winter vaccination campaign. The free, single‑dose immunization will be available at municipal health centers for infants born after 1 September 2025 who meet criteria such as prematurity, chronic lung disease, congenital heart defects, immunodeficiency or certain genetic conditions. Both programs aim to reduce RSV‑related hospitalisations and deaths among the most vulnerable infants.
