Brazil and China seek to accelerate Mercosur free trade talks

Brazil and China have expressed mutual agreement to accelerate negotiations for a free trade agreement between the Mercosur trade bloc and China. This development follows a telephone conversation between Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Chinese President Xi Jinping on July 26.

Uruguay supports the initiative, but formal negotiations cannot begin until all five voting members of Mercosur—Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay—approve the project. Argentina and Paraguay have previously remained cautious regarding a trade deal with Beijing.

Analysts suggest the push for a deal serves as a political signal to the United States in response to recent trade tensions. This follows US President Donald Trump's July 2025 executive order imposing 40 percent punitive tariffs on Brazilian goods, a move that has caused significant friction between Brazil and the US.
