Brazil and Nigeria Commit to Joint Traditional Medicine Initiative

Representatives of Nigeria, including the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and officials from the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, met with Brazilian authorities at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro. The high‑level bilateral meeting produced a comprehensive roadmap for cooperation on traditional medicine, covering medicinal‑plant research, technology transfer, academic exchange and public‑health innovation.

The partnership aims to achieve global scientific validation of African traditional remedies, reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported pharmaceuticals and create new economic opportunities. Ongoing Harvard–Brazil–Nigeria metabolomics studies of 68 medicinal plants will be expanded, and the initiative is framed as a South‑South collaboration to integrate evidence‑based indigenous healthcare into formal health systems.
