Portugal faces returning heat wave with temperatures near 40 °C

Meteorological agencies forecast a rapid rise in temperatures across continental Portugal this week, with maximums approaching 40 °C in interior regions such as Alentejo, Beja and Castelo Branco. The heat follows a brief cool spell and is driven by a hot Mediterranean air mass expanding westward. While the forecast predicts dry conditions, a weakening front may bring scattered rain toward the end of the week.

The intense heat is prompting a surge in demand for cooling products. Klarna data shows fan sales in Portugal have risen 134 % compared with the same period last year, with notable increases in blackout curtains (98 %) and air‑conditioners (78 %). The consumer trend reflects heightened concern over prolonged high temperatures, which are expected to persist throughout the coming days.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) also notes that sea‑surface temperatures will climb to around 20 °C, reinforcing the overall warm outlook.
