Brazil's e‑commerce surge fuels AI logistics, marketplace dominance and warehouse boom

Artificial‑intelligence adoption in Brazil’s online‑shopping ecosystem is accelerating. IDC forecasts AI‑driven software, services and infrastructure spending to reach US$ 3.4 billion in 2026, a 30 % rise from the previous year, while the Brazilian Association of E‑commerce (ABComm) reports a 45 % jump in automation investment between 2023 and 2024. Logtechs such as SmartEnvios use AI to match millions of orders with optimal carriers in real time, helping retailers cut costs and improve delivery predictability. Consumer expectations are tight: 76 % of shoppers say delivery speed decides where they buy, and 62 % abandon carts when timing information is unclear, translating to an estimated R$ 28 billion loss in 2024.

Marketplaces dominate the sales channel, with Shopee, Mercado Libre and others accounting for 71 % of all Brazilian online purchases. In August, Mercado Libre reclaimed the top spot for site visits (384.8 million), while the newcomer Temu fell by 17 % to 339 million visits. The logistics side is reacting to this demand: pre‑leasing of warehouse space hit a record, with 68 % of 777,000 m² slated for completion in Q3 already contracted, driven largely by Shopee and Mercado Libre.

Retail operators are also turning to self‑service kiosks; a McKinsey study links low operational efficiency to up to 30 % revenue loss, while auto‑checkout can cut queue times by half and boost sales by up to 40 %. Simultaneously, legal debates on consumer‑right extensions to digital goods and protection against online fraud are intensifying, underscoring the sector’s rapid transformation.
