Brazil and Portugal unveil major film funding initiatives

Brazil's National Development Bank (BNDES) announced a R$10.8 million public sponsorship call on June 29 to support up to 18 audiovisual projects, including 15 feature films and three national film festivals. The program reserves slots for regional producers from the North, Northeast and Central‑West and requires a "iconic counterpart" to amplify social or artistic impact. Selections will be paid in two installments, with applications closing on August 13.

Portugal opened applications for its new Audio‑Visual Production Incentive Regime (RIPAC) on June 29, offering an annual €50 million budget split between medium‑budget (cash rebate) and large‑budget (cash refund) productions. The regime is part of a larger €350 million SCRI.PT program for 2026‑2029 and includes a €150 million mutual‑guarantee credit line. Applications are evaluated by a three‑member selection commission and aim to boost domestic production and international co‑production.

Both initiatives aim to stimulate national film industries, create jobs, and enhance cultural exports.
