Brazil and U.S. establish working group to negotiate trade tariffs

Brazil and the United States have agreed to establish a joint working group to negotiate a potential trade agreement and address bilateral commercial obstacles. The decision was announced following a meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, held on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers meeting. Brazilian officials, including Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Minister of Development Márcio Elias Rosa, met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss both tariff and non-tariff issues.

The working group aims to mitigate the impact of recent U.S. tariffs on Brazilian exports. In July, the U.S. government implemented a 25% tariff on certain Brazilian goods under Section 301 of U.S. trade law. Additionally, a 12.5% tariff was applied following investigations into forced labor practices. When both measures apply to the same product, the total tariff can reach 37.5%.

The U.S. government is expected to submit a formal proposal defining the scope of the working group's activities in the coming weeks. This diplomatic effort follows high-level communications between Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Donald Trump, including a telephone conversation on August 21.
