Brazil and United States to negotiate trade surcharges
Brazil and the United States have agreed to establish a working group to address bilateral trade barriers and negotiate additional surcharges on specific products. The discussions, held in Milwaukee during a G20 trade ministers meeting, aim to address tariffs that reach as high as 37.5% for certain goods.
Key sectors potentially affected by these surcharges include sugar (25%), seafood (12.5%), and various wood products, fats, and oils, which may face combined rates. Negotiating these barriers offers exporters the chance to regain competitiveness in the American market. Notably, other major Brazilian agricultural exports, such as coffee, meat, orange juice, fruit, and most cellulose, are currently excluded from these specific surcharges.
The next step involves the United States government, which is expected to present a document outlining proposed negotiation themes in the coming weeks. The working group will also address other obstacles to bilateral trade, though no specific timeline or final list of discussed products has been established.
