Brazil and U.S. diplomatic crisis stalls crime cooperation
A diplomatic crisis between Brazil and the United States is hindering cooperation in combating transnational organized crime. The U.S. Department of State has withheld visas for two Brazilian Federal Police agents intended for posts in Miami and New York to work with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
In a reciprocal move, Brazil is blocking the visa of a U.S. law enforcement agent assigned to Brasília. Additionally, the U.S. government denied a request for a visit by Brazilian customs and tax officials who are investigating money laundering and arms smuggling linked to international drug cartels, citing a full schedule through November.
The tension follows the April expulsion of Brazilian attaché Marcelo Ivo de Carvalho by the U.S. government, which cited allegations of political persecution. In response to that expulsion, Brazil revoked the credentials of a U.S. agent in Brasília. While basic technical cooperation, such as container information sharing, continues, officials warn that the lack of high-level coordination threatens efforts to combat increasingly well-resourced criminal factions.
