Brazil faces trade disputes with EU and US amid Mexico's record exports

Brazil is facing significant trade tensions with both the European Union and the United States. The Brazilian government has threatened to invoke reciprocity measures under national law and the Mercosur-EU agreement in response to the European Union's decision to restrict imports of Brazilian animal proteins, including beef, poultry, fish, and honey. The EU cites concerns over the use of antimicrobials in livestock production. An EU technical audit of Brazilian poultry and honey supply chains is currently underway and is expected to conclude by September 4.

Simultaneously, Brazil and the United States have resumed high-level negotiations to address U.S. tariffs on Brazilian goods. These include a 25 percent surcharge based on investigations into unfair trade practices and an additional 12.5 percent tariff related to alleged failures in enforcing bans on products made with forced labor. Brazilian officials have disputed these claims, arguing the measures are politically motivated.

In a separate trade development, Mexico continues to see record-breaking export growth to the United States. In the first seven months of 2026, Mexican exports to the U.S. reached a historic high of $358.7 billion, driven largely by a massive surge in high-tech manufacturing and computer equipment, which has begun to rival the traditional dominance of the automotive sector.
