Brazil and U.S. to hold WTO consultations over trade tariffs

Brazil and the United States are scheduled to hold their first round of official consultations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva this Friday. The meeting is part of the formal dispute settlement process regarding additional tariffs imposed by the United States on Brazilian products.

The dispute centers on two specific U.S. measures: a 25% surtax based on alleged unfair trade practices and a 12.5% tariff linked to investigations into forced labor. The Brazilian government, which filed the formal request in July, argues these measures violate international trade rules.

In a related development, the United States rejected a request from China to participate in these consultations as a third party. U.S. officials stated that Brazil’s request does not concern Chinese policies or tariffs and argued that China lacks a substantial commercial interest in this specific matter. Brazilian authorities have described the upcoming WTO meeting as a diplomatic and largely protocol-driven step.
