Brazil and U.S. to resume tariff negotiations at G20 meeting
Brazil and the United States are scheduled to resume face-to-face negotiations regarding tariffs imposed by the U.S. government on Brazilian products. The meeting is set to take place between September 30 and October 1 in Milwaukee, USA, during a G20 Trade and Investment ministerial meeting.
Brazilian Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Márcio Elias Rosa, confirmed that technical teams are exchanging documents to prepare for the talks. The Brazilian delegation is expected to include Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, and they will meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. While technical teams have been in contact via videoconference, no formal agreement has yet been reached.
The tariffs in question include a 25% additional duty applied by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on various sectors such as iron, steel, apparel, footwear, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural machinery. Additionally, a 12.5% surcharge was applied to certain goods, with the U.S. citing concerns regarding labor practices in Brazil. Affected agribusiness products include sugar and ethanol.
