Mato Grosso do Sul: National Force deployed to protect indigenous villages

The Brazilian federal government has deployed 145 agents from the National Force of Public Security to Mato Grosso do Sul to protect Guarani Kaiowá indigenous communities. The mobilization follows reports of violence and threats, including audio recordings circulating on social media that suggested poisoning the water supply in the Sassoró village in Tacuru.

Federal ministers, including the Ministers of Indigenous Peoples, Human Rights, and Justice and Public Security, visited the affected areas in Tacuru and Coronel Sapucaia to coordinate responses. The National Force will implement a “Minute a Minute” protocol, ensuring teams remain on the ground to respond immediately to criminal incidents.

Two municipal employees from Tacuru have been suspended and are under investigation by the Federal Police after allegedly admitting to recording the threatening audio. While the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples has received 10 specific complaints from indigenous communities, four of these are located in Mato Grosso do Sul. The Federal Police and the Federal Public Ministry are investigating the incidents, which surfaced following the 2026 presidential elections.
