Brazil announces national highway connectivity policy

The Brazilian federal government has launched the National Highway Connectivity Policy, a joint initiative by the Ministries of Communications and Transport aimed at expanding mobile coverage across the country's road networks. The plan seeks to bring 4G and 5G signals to 57,100 kilometers of federal and state highways by 2030.

A key component of the policy is mandatory signal sharing among mobile operators, starting in 2027. This 'roaming' mechanism will allow users to access a competitor's network if their own provider lacks coverage in a specific area. This measure is expected to increase mobile coverage on federal highways from 36.6% to 58.9%.

In Paraíba, the BR-101 and BR-230 highways will receive full coverage through frequency auctions and signal sharing. The expansion will also be supported by investments from the 700 MHz band auction winners and the Federal Universalization of Telecommunications Fund (Fust).
