Brazil approves gradual reduction of foreign player limits in Brasileirão

Brazilian football clubs in Serie A and Serie B have approved a gradual reduction of the foreign player limit for the Brasileirão, a move proposed by the CBF. The new regulations will begin in 2027, reducing the current limit of nine foreign players per match to eight. This limit will decrease by one player each season, reaching a cap of five players by 2030.

This policy change directly impacts Chilean players Erick Pulgar of Flamengo and Guillermo Maripán of Internacional. Both clubs currently have ten foreign players in their professional squads, already exceeding the upcoming 2027 limit of eight and significantly surpassing the eventual limit of five. While Pulgar is considered a key figure at Flamengo, the reduction will create intense competition for roster spots among the club's international talent.
