Brazil approves six new fertilizer projects to boost domestic production

The National Council of Fertilizers and Plant Nutrition (Confert) met in Brasília on July 3 and approved six private‑sector projects for the expansion of phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers. The phosphate projects, led by OCP Brasil, Fospar and Mosaic, will develop complexes in Barcarena (PA), Paranaguá (PR), Cajati (SP), Tapira (SP) and Uberaba (MG). The nitrogen initiative adds a large production hub headed by Petrobras' UFN‑III unit in Três Lagoas (MS). All projects align with the 2023‑revised National Fertilizer Plan, which targets a 50 % increase in Brazil's self‑sufficiency for these inputs. Secretary of Industrial Development Uallace Moreira highlighted Petrobras' role and the BNDES’s below‑market credit lines aimed at stimulating investment and reducing reliance on imports. The council reported that 56 % of its strategic indicators are already finalized or near completion. Presentations by the National Union of Fertilizer Raw‑Material Industries, Petrobras and BNDES outlined the national production outlook and the investment portfolio supporting agricultural independence.
