Brazil arrests after animal cruelty videos in Minas Gerais and Porto Alegre

A 42‑year‑old man was indicted by the Minas Gerais Civil Police for animal cruelty after security‑camera footage captured him violently throwing a dog from a car onto a public street in Araxá on May 6. The dog, which survived the attack, was later adopted. The suspect faces charges under Article 32 of the Environmental Crimes Law, which can carry imprisonment and fines.

In Porto Alegre, a woman was placed in preventive custody after a video from November showed her killing a dog with a pickaxe. The Rio Grande do Sul Court of Justice authorized the detention following a request from the public prosecutor. She is being investigated for mistreatment of a domestic animal under the same legal provisions.

Both cases have drawn public attention to animal‑abuse offenses in Brazil and resulted in legal actions against the perpetrators.
