Brazil police arrest suspects and seize tons of cocaine in coordinated crackdown

Police forces in several Brazilian states carried out a wave of operations targeting homicide suspects, drug traffickers and other criminals. In Santa Inês, Bahia, a 21‑year‑old alleged murderer and gang member was arrested. In Maceió, federal agents detained a man linked to child‑sex abuse after uncovering illegal images on a computer. In Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul, a suspect in the killing of a military police officer died during a shoot‑out while another was captured. A couple in Salvador was seized with over a thousand drug portions, rifle ammunition and forged police uniforms. A helicopter carrying more than 200 kg of cocaine was intercepted over Florínea, São Paulo, leading to the pilot’s arrest. São Paulo’s metro‑wide facial‑recognition system identified and helped capture a homicide fugitive near the Palmeiras‑Barra Funda station. The state of Mato Grosso deployed 47 new patrol cars for its Maria da Penha domestic‑violence unit, reaching all municipalities. Long‑term fugitives were also caught, including a 69‑year‑old convicted for the 1984 Baldo bus tragedy and a former inmate who evaded justice for over 40 years. In Mato Grosso, Operation Gomorra’s second phase executed 26 judicial orders, seizing cash and freezing assets linked to alleged public‑contract fraud. These actions illustrate a nationwide intensification of law‑enforcement efforts against violent crime, drug trafficking and organized‑crime networks.
