Brazil Attorney General denies ties to imprisoned banker Vorcaro

Brazil's Attorney General, Paulo Gonet, testified before the Supreme Court, denying any close relationship with Daniel Vorcaro, a banker currently in preventive detention for multi-million dollar financial fraud.

The testimony is part of a judicial investigation into whether Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes maintained improper proximity to Vorcaro, the former owner of Banco Master. The case has triggered a significant political and judicial crisis in Brazil due to alleged contacts between the banker and high-ranking authorities.

Gonet addressed allegations regarding message exchanges involving attorney Ciro Soares, who reportedly acted as a bridge between the banker and the Attorney General. Gonet dismissed these communications as “brevísima” (very brief) and “banal” (banal), stating they hold “ninguna relevancia jurídica” (no legal relevance). He noted his only personal encounter with Vorcaro occurred during an official event in April 2024.
