Brazil authorities combat energy fraud and extortion

Authorities in Brazil have intercepted two separate incidents involving electricity-related crimes. In São Paulo, four men were arrested in the Vila Maria Alta district for attempting to extort a gym owner. The suspects allegedly posed as Enel employees, using branded uniforms and vehicles to demand R$ 30,000 under the false pretense of electrical installation irregularities. The group threatened to cut the power if the payment was not made.

In Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul, an operation by Neoenergia Elektro and local police uncovered significant energy theft. Illegal connections were identified at a hotel, a pastry shop, an inn, a tattoo studio, and a residence. The diverted electricity was estimated to be enough to power 1,270 homes for one month. While no arrests were made during the Três Lagoas operation, the owners have been identified and face potential charges for theft or fraud.
