Brazil expands National Force to protect Guarani Kaiowá villages

The Brazilian federal government has announced an expansion of the National Force of Public Security in Mato Grosso do Sul to protect Guarani Kaiowá indigenous communities. This measure follows reports of increased political violence and intimidation following the second round of presidential elections.

Ministers Wellington César Lima e Silva (Justice), Eloy Terena (Indigenous Peoples), and Janine Mello (Human Rights) visited the Sassoró and Taquapery villages near the Paraguayan border to assess the situation. The National Force will implement a “minute-by-minute” operational procedure, ensuring rapid deployment and constant presence in high-risk areas.

Investigations are underway regarding several serious incidents, including an audio recording in which individuals allegedly threatened to poison the water supply in Sassoró village. Two municipal employees in Tacuru have reportedly been removed from their positions and are under investigation by the Federal Police. Additionally, authorities are looking into the criminal arson of a 90-year-old woman’s home in the Jaguapiré village. The Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib) has documented more than 30 cases of violence against indigenous populations in the region during this period.
