Brazil authorities seize dozens of wild birds in separate illegal trade operations

Authorities in Brazil have conducted separate operations to seize illegally held wild birds. In Morrinhos, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) rescued 24 northeastern cardinal birds being transported in a vehicle's trunk on the BR-153 highway. The birds were kept in small cages without adequate ventilation or water. The individuals involved, who claimed to have purchased the birds in São Paulo, face charges for environmental crimes. The animals were transferred to the Wildlife Animal Screening Center (CETRAS) in Caldas Novas.

In Santa Catarina, the Military Police seized 19 wild birds following an anonymous tip regarding illegal trade in São Domingos. The seizure included 10 galos-da-campina, three curiós, one azulão, and five trinca-ferros. A 64-year-old man at the property stated the birds belonged to a relative and acknowledged knowledge of their commercialization. The animals were taken to the Environmental Military Police in Chapecó.
