Brazil authorities seize native bird eggs valued at R$ 9 million
Federal Revenue officers in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, detained a couple attempting to transport 32 native bird eggs on an interstate bus. The shipment, estimated to be worth up to R$ 9 million on the European market, was destined for Galeão International Airport in Rio de Janeiro.
The suspects reportedly agreed to receive R$ 3,000 to complete the delivery. To ensure the survival of the embryos, the smugglers used a sophisticated clandestine incubation system involving thermal boxes, electronic circuits, fans, and sensors to regulate temperature and ventilation. Some eggs were hidden inside a jacket, while others were kept in an adapted suitcase.
The individuals were taken to the Federal Police station for questioning. The eggs were handed over to the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) for species identification and preservation care.
