Brazil launches nationwide toy safety and anti-counterfeit operations
Consumer protection agencies and police forces across Brazil have launched widespread operations to inspect toy retailers ahead of Children's Day. These actions aim to ensure product safety and prevent the sale of counterfeit or unregulated goods.
In São Paulo, the Civil Police (Deic) conducted the ‘Brinquedo Seguro’ operation, seizing over 52,500 counterfeit toys in the city center and Canindé. Authorities highlighted risks associated with ‘squishies’ and other items lacking Inmetro certification, noting they could contain carcinogenic substances or cause physical injuries such as choking or burns.
In other regions, agencies like Procon-JP in João Pessoa and Procon Maceió have been inspecting stores for proper pricing, age labeling, and mandatory safety seals. Procon-JP reported seizing products without price tags and fining establishments for improper credit payment requirements. In Piauí, IMEPI seized more than 3,300 irregular items, including toys, bicycles, and baby strollers, during its ‘Operação Criança Segura’.
To mitigate risks, authorities and agencies like Procon-RJ are advising parents to verify Inmetro seals, check age recommendations, ensure instructions are in Portuguese, and avoid purchasing from informal commerce.
