Brazil authorities warn of rising risks from improper medical needle disposal

Public health authorities in Brazil are raising alarms regarding the improper disposal of sharps, such as syringes and needles, in domestic waste. In Campo Grande, accidents involving sharps increased by approximately 142% between January and September compared to the previous year, with a massive 800% spike recorded in September alone.

Waste management companies, including Solurb, have noted a rise in biological risks due to the increasing use of injectable medications for weight loss at home. Unlike broken glass, used needles pose a significant threat of exposure to infectious biological agents for waste collection professionals.

In Araucária, the Municipal Department of Public Cleaning and the Municipal Secretariat of Environment (SMMA) are instructing citizens to avoid placing these items in common or recyclable trash. The recommended procedure is to store needles in rigid, puncture-resistant containers, such as PET bottles or milk cartons, clearly labeled with a warning. These containers should then be taken to the nearest Basic Health Unit (UBS) for proper medical waste disposal.
