Brazil authorizes temporary prison releases for Children's Day

Authorities in several Brazilian regions have authorized temporary releases for inmates to celebrate Children's Day. In the Federal District, 1,479 detainees, including 79 women, were granted leave, with a scheduled return by Tuesday, October 13.

In Maranhão, specifically in São Luís, 1,491 individuals received authorization. Meanwhile, in Piauí, the Court of Criminal Executions in Teresina authorized 472 prisoners for the holiday period.

These temporary releases are restricted to inmates serving sentences in a semi-open regime who meet specific legal requirements, such as good behavior and having served a portion of their sentence (one-sixth for first-time offenders and one-fourth for repeat offenders). Under current laws, those convicted of heinous crimes involving violence or serious threats are ineligible for this benefit. Some detainees may be required to wear electronic monitoring devices during their period of liberty.
