Brazil automotive industry targets sustainability through steel innovation and recycling

The Brazilian automotive industry is focusing on technological advancements in materials and improvements in end-of-life vehicle management to promote sustainability and the circular economy.

On the manufacturing side, high-strength steel solutions from companies like ArcelorMittal and Tuper are being utilized to enhance vehicle safety, reduce weight, and improve fuel efficiency. Products such as Usibor® for hot stamping and XCarb® for low-carbon emissions are helping manufacturers meet rigorous quality and environmental standards.

Simultaneously, the industry faces significant challenges regarding vehicle recycling. Data from the Brazilian Association of Automotive Recycling (ABCAR) suggests that while approximately 2 million vehicles reach the end of their useful life annually in Brazil, only 1.5% receive proper disposal. This inefficiency results in an estimated R$ 14 billion in recoverable parts being discarded each year. Discussions at the Auto360 event highlighted the need for better reverse logistics and engineering designs that facilitate the recovery of plastics, fabrics, and composites alongside metals.
