Brazil automotive market sees surge in sales and electric vehicle adoption
The Brazilian automotive market is experiencing significant growth and structural transformation in 2026. Vehicle sales in the first half of the year reached 2,715,403 units, a 16.01% increase compared to 2025, marking the strongest first semester since 2011. This expansion is supported by a robust credit market, with 3.78 million vehicles financed between January and June, the best performance since 2008.
A major shift is occurring toward electrification. In July, electrified vehicles accounted for 23.3% of new car registrations, with a 123% year-over-year increase. For the first time, the three top-selling retail models were 100% electric, led by the BYD Dolphin, followed by the Geely EX2 and BYD Dolphin Mini. Chinese manufacturers like BYD and GWM are aggressively expanding their market share, growing at rates significantly higher than the national average.
The SUV segment also remains a dominant force, growing 37% compared to 2025. Notably, the GWM Haval H6 has emerged as a new leader in the medium SUV category, surpassing the Jeep Compass. As the market diversifies with over 50 new launches expected in the second half of the year, including various hybrids and electric models, consumers face increased competition and a wider variety of technological options.
