Brazil begins historic building restorations in Paraná and Minas Gerais

In Paranaguá, Paraná, cleaning and structural stabilization work started on Thursday, 16 July at the historic Caetano Munhoz da Rocha Education Institute, which was damaged by a fire on 4 April. The first phase includes provisional closure of the affected area, installation of temporary roofing, shoring of remaining walls and removal of damaged materials to secure the building and prepare it for further restoration. The 1927‑built institute, a heritage‑listed site serving more than 1,600 students, suffered material damage but no injuries. A public call for sponsors runs until 30 July to support the reconstruction.

In Congonhas, Minas Gerais, the historic house that houses the Museum of Image and Memory will close to the public from 13 July for an extensive restoration and museographic upgrade. Funding comes from the federal New PAC program through Iphan, covering the museum, the former municipal chamber and a new suspension bridge. The project aims to preserve the site, improve visitor experience and stimulate local tourism, benefiting hotels, restaurants and craft merchants.
