Brazil betting sector faces uncertainty following presidential decree
The online betting sector in Brazil is facing significant economic and social challenges following a decree by President Lula da Silva prohibiting certain .bet operations. Since the decree, approximately 4,000 professionals have been laid off in the country.
Financial implications for the industry are substantial. Betting platforms had already contributed R$ 11 billion in taxes to the Treasury by September, with projections reaching R$ 15 billion by December. Additionally, at least 85 companies have paid R$ 30 million in concessions to the Treasury and currently face no prospect of reimbursement.
Beyond economic impacts, the shift toward illegality has raised social concerns, including a lack of support for pathological gamblers through partnerships with the Unified Health System (SUS). Meanwhile, public opinion remains high regarding restrictions, with Datafolha reporting 78% support for the prohibition of bets and online casinos.
