Brazil Bill Guarantees Acceptance of Nurse Prescriptions in Pharmacies

Federal deputy Rejane (PCdoB‑RJ) has introduced Bill PL 4.840/2026 in the Chamber of Deputies to require public and private pharmacies and drugstores across Brazil to accept prescriptions issued by nurses who are registered with the Conselho Regional de Enfermagem (COREN). The proposal does not create new prescribing powers for nurses; it seeks to enforce competencies already recognized in Law 7.498/1986, Decree 94.406/1987 and existing health‑program protocols. Pharmacies must follow current sanitary regulations, including rules for special‑control medicines, and may not refuse a prescription solely because it was written by a nursing professional. Non‑compliance would trigger penalties under the sanitary legislation and the Consumer Defense Code. The bill now proceeds to committee review before a full vote.
