Brazil Bill proposes mandatory color labeling on clothing to assist colorblind consumers
A new legislative proposal in Brazil, Bill 2056/26, seeks to mandate that the predominant color of textile and clothing products be indicated on their labels. The bill, authored by Deputy Aureo Ribeiro, aims to assist approximately 8 million Brazilians living with color vision deficiency, commonly known as colorblindness.
Under the proposed law, color information must be provided either in written text or through standardized, accessible symbols, such as tactile or visual codes. For items featuring multiple colors, the label would specify the background color or the color covering the largest surface area. The federal government would be responsible for establishing technical standards and implementation deadlines.
The proposal is currently under review by the Chamber of Deputies and will proceed through the Consumer Defense, Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and Constitution and Justice and Citizenship committees. To become law, it requires approval from both the Chamber and the Senate.
