Brazil blood banks issue alerts over critical supply shortages
Health institutions in Brazil have issued alerts regarding critical blood shortages. In Minas Gerais, the Hemominas Regional Hemocenter in Juiz de Fora reports that available blood volumes have fallen below 40% of the ideal level. Specific concerns have been raised regarding O negative, O positive, and A negative blood types. The institution serves over 60 hospitals across 33 municipalities.
Across Minas Gerais, Hemominas has classified O+, O-, A+, and A- blood types as being in a critical state, while B+, B-, and AB- are under alert.
In Mato Grosso, the MT Hemocentro has also registered alert levels for B negative, O negative, and O positive blood types. The facility in Cuiabá and 15 collection units throughout the state are calling for volunteers of all blood groups to ensure the continuity of public health services.
